The main characters we have met so far are Clayton, Tom and Alice, a trio of survivors in Boston. So far the story has unfolded that everyone using a cell phone has heard a "pulse" that turned them into cannibal zombies. Our characters have faced attacks and in the case of Alice had to choose life over family connections. The city has been compared to a war zone.
The main social issues I see raised have been what effect has cell phones had on society? Have we lost some of what makes us human? Without face to face communication are we devolving?
I am thoroughly enjoying the story so far. A thought that made me laugh was initially I said to myself I would have been out of luck, a total zombie, I am always using my phone, but then I thought about it more and I don't actually talk on my phone very often. I use apps and the internet and texting, a lot of texting but rarely talk so maybe I would have been alright after all.

Thats a good question. Are we devolving? My opinion is no but that could change.
I am like that too. When I am using my phone it is never for talking. It is so much easier just to send a text message, or just use it for entertainment when I am bored. Phones have made us into zombies; maybe not flesh eating tongue talking ones, but the ones who are more focused on playing on our own phones then being social towards people.
The cellphones had effecting our society a lot. At some point, we can no longer live "normally" without a cell phone in today society. Without the cell phone, we can not find a job. Not keeping cell phone on or not replying a text as soon as possible is consider not taking the responsibility. Cell phone is not only changing the "phoner" but every one.
I agree, I think King is taking the opinion that cell phones drive us and those around us nuts, squawking random ramblings and negative social behavior and putting it into a more extreme side of the scale.
