Green Mile part 1 February 23, 2011
In the beginning of the novel you are introduced to cold Mountain. A prison and death row facility. “Old sparky” is the nickname given to the electric chair with awaits every death row inmate. We are introduced to John coffey early on in the chapter, ( a huge black man convicted of a crime to sick to mention.) He was convicted of the rape and murder of the Detterick twins. You are also introduced to the prison guards. Brutus ‘brutal Howe”, percy wetmore, and Paul Edgecombe. John Coffey is brought into E block, and seems to be afraid of the dark. A strange characteristic of someone his size. The main plot events that occur in this section are it shows what led to the arrest of coffey and how he ended up in prison and early things about the characters. I think the social issues it tackles are racisim and cruel and unusual punishment.

Racism is certainly a factor. I think the book said a lot between the lines when the police and father and son go looking for the twin girls and find this black man with their dead bodies. All these men, (who are also white) are disgusted with what they find, and rightly should they be. However, the police took John Coffey’s words as an automatic confession. It appears that this man is 100 percent guilty and he has “confessed” so there is never a search to see if it is possible that anyone else could be the killer. Also, all the guards at the prison are also white men. I think with the story set in the 1930’s this racism is inevitable and plays a large role in the Green Mile.
