Essay 4: Expanding on Essay 3

Since my third essay was on the topic of capital punishment - and that topic in itself could have a novel written about it - my plan is to add on a couple more testimonies and statistical examples to support my position concerning the fiscal benifits of abolishing the death penalty nationally. Hopefully this will be a relatively painless process, considering the fact that the deadline for this six to eight page paper happens to fall in around the same time as two other major assignments in my other classes...weak.

During part of 4 of The Green Mile we are the loop when Paul throws in a crazy idea to save Warden Moores wife. He begins by telling his right hand man Brutal well obviously Brutal says its not the best idea but paul says it needs to be done. To get out of the prison they need to get past one problem thats still waiting to be moved to Briar Ridge...Percy Wetmore. They decide to lock up Percy in a straight jacket and throw him in the the old looney room at the end of mile. They tell Percy they put him there for payback to what happened to Eldward Delacroix. After Percy was out of the way they take John on a long trip to the wardens house. At first when the warden realizes who is there he freaks out and doesn't want anything to do with his plan but paul assures him it'll be alright. After John goes upstairs and heals the wardens wife, everyone is in disbelief at the amazing feat that just happend before their eyes.

Misery #4

At this point in the book, Paul was very careful to choose his words because he never knew when Annie would snap on him about anything. Paul was still being tortured by Annie up until this point because she had cut off his thumb and his left leg from the knee down. She fixed him a birthday cake and placed his thumb on it as a candle and gave it to him to eat, although he did not eat it. Annie was always being teased by the kids that are her neighbors because they know that she's physco. Paul was more focused and conscience of writing the novel because he knew he was almost to the end of it. There was a new character involved, a cop, who was very sharp and well dressed. He went to Annie's house looking for Paul because they had found his car and Annie kills the cop. Paul has a calendar in his room and is keeping track of everything, still fighting to escape. Essay 4, polygamy, is Big Love BS?

Channel flipping and I stumbled across this show, I am sure many of you have heard of it before, Sister Wives. Where do I start? I am a sucker for reality tv, let me disclose that bit of information first. There is something almost taboo about seeing the intimate workings of others lives, it is the same misperception of intimacy that we get from social networking sites. The premise of this show of following a family that is practicing polygamy. At first I was creeped out by the concept of it all to be honest. What kind of sleaze ball man would be traipsing around like a dog with all of these women catering to his every whim? And what sort of low self esteem would cause a woman to believe that this is somehow ok? Then I really watched this show, these were not ignorant of brow beaten women. This relationship was working for all of them. Each woman felt empowered and equal, the children were happy and smart and well cared for. This left me with one question, do we criminalize polygamy because it makes us uncomfortable? Does it boil down to our lack of tolerance for things that are different from us?

I am thinking that for essay 4 I want to explore the culture of polygamy, starting with the religious history of the practice and the legal history leading up to it being criminalized. The most well known aspect of polygamy is the history in the Mormon church and the battle to maintain legality in Utah prior to gaining statehood, the truth is though that there are other religions and cultures that practice polygamy and it was the cultural norm for thousands of years. I haven’t started much research so I don’t know how much has been written about the topic, however with all of the madness a few years ago with YFZ compound I feel like this is a relevant topic for many people even if it isn’t something that most of us think about often. Besides, I really like to write about potentially explosive ideas and take the less popular side of the argument.
