Essay 4 Ideas

At first I was drawing a blank about what I could write about that at least had some vague relevance to my novel but when I had my novel discussion I got a few ideas. We're reading The Green Mile and one of the ideas that came to mind was racism. Racism is in several areas in the book because it's based on the early 1900's during or at least around the Great Depression. Racism is still a relevant issue in today's world as well. It would probably be a fairly easy topic to work with. Another idea is the right to a fair trial. In the book, John Coffey's court decision was practically an open and shut case with hardly an idea of "innocent until proven guilty". I will have to decide on what to use soon but at least it's a start.

Racism would make an interesting topic. Through the years it has died down to a minimum, but there are still many people in the world that continue to believe in it. On the other hand it has been pushes aside so much that it is now joked about. Often you will hear people saying "it's because I'm black/white ain't it". It makes a good topic.

You could definitely tie in the books motifs with similarities in real-life situations. The one aspect of racism I've found interesting, as it has evolved rapidly through the past 50 years - is that it's uncouth to admit to being racist, so many have become closet-racist, using excuses or other lines of attack to mask their true feelings. In other words, has racism really tamed itself, or are people simply denying their true feelings on the subject for the fear of a rejecting social agreement?

I think the right to a fair trial would give you more to write about and research. You could cite different cases therefore giving you your works cited. I find this is the most difficult for me. Racism was a major problem in the past. I think racism now days goes in many different directions. I saw advertise on TV the "Houston Black Expo" is coming to the George R. Brown Convention center. To me this is racism because is there was a "Houston White Expo" is would not be acceptable.
