Character Analysis on John Coffey

John Coffey, in my opinion is the most interesting and complex character in The Green Mile. Not only does Stephen King use Coffey as metaphor to resemble the fact that innocent people have been executed on death row, he also uses Coffey to illustrate the idiom that you cant judge a book by its cover. On the surface, John Coffey is an ignorant, illiterate, giant of a man who is accused of raping and killing two very young girls. This seems to make his character menacing and evil, however as King begins to develope Coffey's character throughout the bbok and movie the audience begins to see that John is a kind hearted man capable of amzing things, or as put by the character Paul Edgecombe, a gift from god.

This is so true. The movie also opens up the face that sterotypes are not always as they appear. The time in which they lived blacks were not equal to whites but Paul made a difference in that viewpoint. Actually being in jail and facing death was a lot easier for John than being out in a world full of hate that he can feel.
