I am writing Essay 3 about legalizing marijuana. It’s definitely not the biggest social issue out there today; however, it is an unnecessary focused topic. Since there are much more important things going on I do not understand why so much of the limelight is on penalty for marijuana users. Even if not legalizing it, I do think that less punishment should be considered. Over 68,000 people got arrested just last year and many lost jobs. Is it really that crucial? Marijuana is actually less dangerous than alcohol, cigarettes, and most over-the-counter medicines or prescriptions. Marijuana, in its natural form, is one of the safest substances known to man. Marijuana is illegal in the United States when alcohol poisoning is a major cause of death and approximately 400,000 premature deaths are attributed to cigarettes a year. Being an alcoholic can result in inability to talk, walk, function, and even death. How often do you hear about someone overdosing on marijuana? There are no records of any deaths due to marijuana. Aspirin is completely legal but if you take 12 of them it will be your last headache. In places such as California, people are prescribed marijuana for health purposes, involving anxiety, high blood pressure, nausea suffered by cancer patients, and glaucoma. The government could also benefit from making billions of dollars a year from taxing marijuana, which would help with our country’s huge debt. These are only a few reasons why I believe it should be legalized, or at least less of a penalty.

i agree completely, marijuana should be legalized. it has less of an effect on society then alcohol and cigarrettes. marijuana subject will be a good essay to write about.
Good Luck!!!!!!!
good luck try to get that accomplished i can see the penalty being a little less. but not legalizing.
You make some good points, however, You probably don't hear people's families wanting to admit that their child overdosed on an illegal drug. So that is probably why you don't hear about overdoses on Marijuana.
sorry Ender, you can't overdose on marijuana. if so, i would have done it.
It would be a quick easy way to help rebuild the economy, along with legalizing gambling. I just don't see marijuana being legalized any time soon.
I totally agree. I don't know if we will ever see if legalized in our lifetime but it should be. I think it is a great way for our country to pull out of the recession. I myself am not a smoker but I would vote in favor. I didnt disagree with one statement you made.
Somewhere in your essay I would like to see something about the combating parties involved in keeping Marijuana illegal. From what I've read in the past, paper companies began the Hemp ban back in the industrial age, Nixon moved it a class up in the drug chain so that he was able to arrest protestors, and now alcohol companies run big government pocketbooks.
California has decriminalized it, and almost had it legalized. However on the bill it stated that Growing would also be legalized, in which companies would not be able to make profit, government could not tax, and thus never had a fighting chance to be passed.
